The team headed up to Dalby Forest, Yorkshire, for Round 3 of the National XC Series on the former World Cup Course, where a high calibre field, including Commonwealth Games winner Anton Cooper and 2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist Marco Fontana, saw the riders fired up for a good race.
After dominant wins at Round 1 & 2 where he finished well clear of the chasing pack, Jake Phelps put in another commanding performance in the Expert Category, leading from the gun until time lost to course traffic saw his lead diminish and a close battle with Ben Wadey (Clee Cycles) ensued, before Jake eventually crossed the line in 2nd.
In the Elite Men’s race Alex Welburn put in another powerful ride to finish 8th, a mere 1:23 off the Podium. After similar results in the 1st and 2nd round of the series, Alex is clearly asserting his dominance as a rider consistently in contention for the Podium. Despite some great form coming into the race and a start that saw him up in the top 10, a puncture saw Joe Griffiths loosing significant time, but he finished a respectable 23rd.
In the Woman’s Elite category, despite a week of illness in the run up to the race, Jo put in another strong ride to finish 8th.
Next up for the team is Round 2 of the Scott Marathon Series at Rhayader in Mid Wales. Thank you to Andy Whitehouse for the images in this report http://www.andyw39.smugmug.com.
