TORQ owner Matt Hart is helping the inspirational William Tan get from Land’s End to John o’Groats in just 9 days on his hand bike with friends Peter and Alan. They are also going the pretty way, averaging over 100 miles per day with quite a few hills to get over. All proceeds go to Bloodwise to fight blood cancer.
125 miles and 5,200 ft of climbing yesterday (the team thought they were doing 115 miles and 3,200 ft). This was BIG day and they left Penrith at 7am, not arriving in Falkirk until 8:30pm. The weather was beautiful, although the was a strong north easterly wind, making progress slow.
They stopped at Gretna Green, where Matt and Will eloped ???? and the team lost another hour due to another mechanical with Will’s bike. It was a second broken gear cable – the cables are put under stress on a hand bike, because they rotate with the crank. A friendly BT guy helped them out by lending his cable snips and long-nosed pliers. All other stops were brief, because of the tight time constraints.
Today, the team ride from Falkirk to Aviemore in the Cairngorns. 117 miles and 7,822 ft of climbing! The weather looks dry, yet cold, but the team will be riding into a very strong northerly wind – this is going to be an enormous day!
