TORQ-fuelled Julia Bleasdale speaks to us about her journey to qualify for the London Olympics. She’s in St Moritz, Switzerland undergoing final preparations at the moment – how the other half live eh?
I have been selected to represent Team GB in the 5000m and the 10000m at the Olympics!
What a journey it has been. The past month has been so busy. Having achieved the Olympic A standard for the 10000m in April in the US, next up was the UK Olympic Trials, 5000m, in Birmingham. I finished third in a tactical race with a blistering finish pace.
That set me up perfectly for a good performance in the European Championships in Helsinki four days later. At this point I did not have the Olympic A standard for the 5000m and knew it was my last chance to make the break!
I felt just great. When the race slowed I pushed the pace and was only just out-sprinted in the home straight. I finished fourth, just over a second behind first place but with a PB of 15.12 and the Olympic standard!
On 3 July Team GB was announced and I was thrilled to be selected for the double.
So now I am in St Moritz, Switzerland, putting in final preparations for the Games. At 1850 altitude with smooth gravel trails, hills, a track and streams for ice baths it is just perfect.
I am never without my TORQ bottle. Up here you really have to make sure you stay hydrated and post workout I am getting the recovery shake in within 5 minutes! Sometimes I cannot even wait until after my warm down and take a few sips before shaking the muscles out after the hard training, yummmm.
Thanks TORQ for joining me on the journey.
My first event in the Olympic stadium is on 3 August at 21.25. Not long now!
