Southport Marine Lake Triathlon

With tricky conditions due to high winds, Ian Roberts battled through the elements to collect another podium result for the team by placing 3rd overall and here’s his account of the event…

Southport triathlon last took place over 20 years ago and was re-established this year at a new venue with a fast and flat course. With the event being so close to home, I entered the Sprint to gain some sharpness for the forthcoming National Championships next week at Ellesmere, Shropshire.

The top end of the race register was very competitive with a number of athletes swimming under 10 minutes for 750m. The start of the swim was frantic and I held position in a small group as we approached the slipway of the lake. I exited the water and entered transition in 10:58 (6th place).

Onto the 23km bike, it became apparent that the course might not be as fast as anticipated. Although the course was pan-flat there was a strong headwind along the sea front reducing speed to a laboured 17-20mph, but I did manage to gain a few places to 4th position. On the return leg with the tail wind, I was averaging 30mph+ (with a big smile on my face) where I made a pass for 3rd place, which I held to transition.

I went on to hold 3rd place throughout the run and gained another podium place for the team. Now looking forward to the impending Natinal Champs.
