Dave maintains his Vitruvian title for the 3rd year running…
This would be my third time competing in the Vitruvian Middle Distance Triathlon. Having won my Age Group for the previous 2 years, this year I was going for the treble.
I was in the first wave for a change so, at 6-15, when the hooter sounded, we began swimming towards the sun rise. Luckily, I got into a good position in the group and had a clean, uneventful swim, was soon into transition and onto the tri-bike. I started to pass people straight away and before long, was out on my own, feeling rather lonely, that is until the faster younger people from the next wave started to catch me up! The first part of the bike was into the wind, which was tough straight after the swim, then it was a case of negotiating the hillier section, known as the Rutland Ripple, before turning into the faster section with the wind behind, before looping back into transition, then onto the second lap. Having tried to keep a steady pace, I was pleased to enter transition leading my Age Group.
A quick transition, then onto the run. The legs felt good and I was quickly into a good pace heading over the dam wall. I tried to push it more for the first lap, to get to the turnaround point and be able to see what sort of lead I had in my Age Group. It was a relief to see I had a good lead, so I was able to ease up a bit for the last 2 miles and was pleased to cross the line having won my Age Group for the third time running.
I was pleased with the way my race went, as it was a last tune up before representing Great Britain in the European Long Distance Championship at Challenge Weymouth in 2 weeks time. So it is now a case of tapering and preparing for race day.
